Honouring Ancestral Wisdom

When we connect back to our ancestral wisdom we connect to the resilience, resourcefulness & organic ways of those before us. We connect to the many layers of our lineage; past & present. Our ancestral lineage connects to all those that came before us, those within our fathers mothers lineage, the plants & animals that inhabit the earth & beyond. This connects us to hundreds of thousands of years of evolution here on mother earth. When we connect to our healed ancestors we create a bridge from the past to the present liberating those before us & honouring there existence, legacy & presence here on earth. 

Connecting to the ancestors is not a new concept, many different cultures all around the world revere their ancestors & actively seek out wisdom, insights & guidance from those living on the other side. There is an act of reciprocity when we express gratitude to those before us as we would not be here if it wasn’t for them. 

Here are a few ways you can start to connect to your ancestral wisdom: 


1. Research Your Ancestry: Learn about your family history & ancestral roots. Understand the cultural traditions, beliefs & practices of your ancestors. This knowledge can provide you with the wisdom of your lineage & also connects you to the organic ways of living before modern times. You might notice that you naturally enjoy certain ways of living just as your ancestors did. Explore historical records, birth certificates, marriage licenses & other documents to learn more about your ancestors lives. Understanding their experiences & challenges can provide valuable insights into their wisdom & resilience. You may be surprised at what you will find within your exploration. This can be so much clarity & awareness to certain situations especially if you were never taught about your lineage. 



2. Create an Ancestral Altar: Set up a sacred space in your home dedicated to honouring your ancestors. You can decorate this sacred space with photos of deceased relatives, candles, incense, flowers & other meaningful items. Use this space for meditation, prayer & reflection. Ask your healed ancestors for guidance & notice what comes through. 



3. Offerings & Rituals: Offerings are a way to honour & connect with your ancestors. You can leave offerings such as foods, drinks, or symbolic items on your ancestral altar. Perform rituals or ceremonies that are meaningful to your ancestral traditions, such as reciting prayers. Maybe there are certain rituals that your ancestors did, connect back to them. 



4. Meditation & Reflection: Spend time in quiet contemplation or meditation, focusing on connecting with your ancestors. Visualize them in your mind's eye imagine them offering guidance, support & wisdom. Notice what comes through or what is being asked of you. 



5. Dream Work: Pay attention to your dreams, as they can be a powerful way for ancestral wisdom to come through. Keep a dream journal by your bed & record any messages or symbols that may come from your ancestors in your dreams. Before you go to bed ask your healed ancestors for insights & guidance in your dreams. 



6. Connecting to Nature: Spend time in nature, connecting with the elements. The elements of the earth & all the beings that live on earth are our ancestors & guides. If you can, connect to the land of your ancestors or take a pilgrimage to travel to the places that your ancestors lived. Walk in the places where they once lived. Listen to the whispers of the earth for guidance & wisdom.



7. Ancestral Practices: Explore traditional practices from your ancestral culture that can help you connect with your lineage. This could include; storytelling, dance, music, or healing rituals that have been passed down through generations. Maybe you haven’t connected to the traditions from your lineage before & that’s okay. Take time to research & connect to certain traditions.



8. Ancestral Healing: Acknowledge & work through any unresolved traumas or wounds within your ancestral lineage. Healing practices such as ancestral clearings, forgiveness rituals, Reiki healing, hypnotherapy or family constellations therapy can help let go of inherited patterns & bring healing within your family line. This will help you to let go of energy that isn’t yours to carry & also will free you from any ancestral burdens.



9. Ancestral Stories & Oral Tradition: Listen to the stories & oral traditions passed down through your family. These stories often contain valuable lessons, wisdom & cultural heritage that can deepen your connection to your ancestors. Story & mythology has been used since the beginning of time to connect us deeper to the human psyche. If you never received any stories or oral traditions from your ancestors, sit in meditation & listen to what comes through. 



10. Ancestral Art & Creativity: Express your connection to your ancestors through art & creativity. Engage in activities such as painting, sculpting, writing & creating, inspired by ancestral themes, symbols, & historical influences. Let this be intuitive & healing.



11. Community & Ancestral Traditions: Connect with other individuals or communities who share a similar ancestral background or cultural heritage. Go to cultural events, ceremonies, or gatherings that celebrate & honour ancestral traditions, fostering a sense of belonging & collective reverence for your shared lineage. Share food, stories & cultural beliefs.


12. Gratitude & Remembrance: Cultivate a practice of gratitude & remembrance for the sacrifices, achievements & contributions of your ancestors. Honour their legacy by living in alignment with their values, wisdom & aspirations, carrying their memory forward with reverence & respect.



13. Intergenerational Dialogue: Have conversations with living relatives about their memories, experiences & knowledge of your family history. Record oral histories, interview elders & preserve family stories for future generations as a way of honouring & preserving your ancestral legacy.


14. Practice Forgiveness: When we practice forgiveness for our lineage & anything those before us have done, we create harmony within our own energy field & free ourselves from holding onto the traumas & pain that our ancestors went through. This is a way to bring peace & rest into your family line. 


There are SO many beautiful ways that you can connect back to the wisdom of your ancestors. I invite you to feel into which of these practices resonates with you. In whatever way you choose to connect with your ancestors you will bring healing & rejuvenation. 

Honouring those before us in whatever way feels right for us is a powerful act of love & respect.

Through doing this, so much in your life will shift & healing will begin to happen on a quantum level.
